- CREATIVE PROCESS
In the rapidly evolving landscape of Bali, green building certification is becoming a focus for architects and developers looking to balance modern design with environmental responsibility. Managed by the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI), the certification process evaluates buildings based on sustainability criteria, ensuring that new constructions minimize their environmental impact. The most prominent certification systems include Greenship, which is specifically designed for Indonesia’s unique ecological and social conditions, alongside internationally recognized standards like LEED and EDGE.
Achieving green building certification is increasingly accessible, with various categories like Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, and Indoor Health providing clear pathways to sustainable design. The process, while rigorous, is structured to reward projects that prioritize eco-friendly materials, renewable energy sources, and efficient resource management. For those aiming for higher levels, such as Gold or Platinum, the journey can be more challenging, requiring careful planning and a strong commitment to sustainability.
GBC Indonesia Certifications
Currently GBC Indonesia is running two different certification system. GREENSHIP certification is based on GREENSHIP rating tools developed by GBC Indonesia and currently covering six types of certification such as New Building, Existing Building, Interior Space, Homes, Neighbor hood, and Net Zero Healthy. The other certification that managed by GBC Indonesia is EDGE Certification as collaboration with International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Types of certification:

Greenship/Edge New Building (NB) Certification
That is intended for buildings to obtain a certification process starting from the project owner. This is demonstrated by a solid commitment to realizing environmentally friendly buildings from the design stage to the completion of the construction phase.
Greenship/Edge Existing Building (EB) Certification
That is intended for buildings that have been built can be certified green buildings where this arises from the commitment of building owners to make their buildings environmentally friendly.
Greenship Interior Space (IS) Certification
The target for GREENSHIP is the user, who is generally a business entity in the form of a tenant company management and uses part or all of the space in the building, followed by the process of fit-out activities that accommodate the company’s activities.
Greenship Home Certification
It is an assessment of the scale of a unit-dwelling house
Greenship Neighborhood Certification
This assessment is for area scales such as housing, CBD, or industrial areas.

Certification system assessment categories:
- Appropriate Site Development (ASD)
- Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EEC)
- Water Conservation (WAC)
- Material Resources and Cycle (MRC)
- Indoor Health and Comfort (IHC)
- Building and Environmental Management (BEM)

Certification Levels:
The certification awards different levels based on the total points achieved:
- Platinum: Requires at least 73% of the total possible points.
- Gold: Requires at least 57% of points.
- Silver: Achievable with 46% of points.
- Bronze: Requires 35% of points
GBCI Client Process:
- Registration:
Register on the GBCI website. Receive fee notification and an appointment letter for SUCOFIN DO (SCI).
- Payment & Documentation:
Transfer the registration fee. Submit eligibility documents for review by SCI.
- Eligibility Confirmation:
Receive a Statement of Eligibility and confirmation of the project registration.
- Workshop:
Schedule and hold a workshop with GBCI and the client, and receive post-workshop documents (attendance, signage)
- Evaluation:
Submit revised documents if needed. SCI conducts the final document evaluation.
- Certification:
Prepare for the final meeting. Certificate issued based on the final evaluation
The Benefits of Green Building Certification
- Environmental Impact Reduction:
Certified buildings are designed to minimize energy and water usage, reduce carbon emissions, and utilize sustainable materials, helping to lower the overall environmental footprint.
- Cost Savings:
Green buildings often have lower operational costs due to improved energy efficiency, water conservation, and reduced waste management expenses. This results in long-term financial savings for property owners.
- Increased Property Value:
Certified green buildings tend to have higher market value due to their sustainability features. Buyers and investors are increasingly interested in eco-friendly properties, making certified buildings more attractive.

- Healthier Living Environment:
Certified buildings emphasize indoor air quality, natural lighting, and ventilation, providing a healthier and more comfortable environment for occupants. This is particularly important for improving overall well-being and reducing health risks.
- Regulatory Compliance & Incentives:
Green building certification helps projects meet local regulations and standards. In some regions, certified buildings may qualify for government incentives, tax benefits, or other financial rewards.
- Corporate Social Responsibility:
Obtaining certification demonstrates a commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices, which can enhance a company‘s reputation and strengthen relationships with stakeholders, including clients, partners, and the community.
- Future-Proofing:
Green buildings are better equipped to handle future regulatory changes related to energy efficiency and sustainability, providing a competitive advantage as environmental standards tighten.
Conclusion
Green building certification is an important step towards creating sustainable buildings in Bali. It offers many benefits, including cost savings, improved occupant health, and a better reputation for builders and architects. By following strict guidelines for site selection, construction, and operation, architects and builders can help to protect Bali’s natural beauty and promote sustainable development practices.
