Cliff House

Cliff House is part of the Mandala Eco-Resort in Lombok. The project takes inspiration from the curves of the surrounding mountains and the petals of the frangipani flower, references that guided the use of organic forms and a modular layout. This approach allowed the design to follow principles of biomimicry while responding to the landscape. 

Beyond its geometry, the villa represents a close relationship with the environment. Its orientation emphasizes ocean views from the elevated site, while its curved layout supports natural ventilation and thermal comfort. These strategies make the house function efficiently in its tropical climate, reducing the need for mechanical systems.

The structure combines bamboo and wood: Bamboo is used for the structural framework and carpentry, while wood forms the roof. Structural bamboo arches were developed as the main construction system, chosen both as a technical challenge and for their ability to reflect the project’s natural inspiration. Both bamboo and wood were sourced locally, reinforcing the connection to place and reducing the project’s environmental footprint. The construction relied on local craftsmanship, drawing on regional expertise in bamboo techniques and ensuring that the building process supported the community.

Sustainability is reinforced through passive design strategies. The orientation captures daylight and ocean views, while the curved form promotes cross ventilation. These elements keep the house naturally ventilated during the day and cool at night. Rainfall is also collected as part of the environmental approach.

Inside, the house is organized into a central common area with large openings facing the sea, which also serves as the distribution point toward the two lateral wings containing the bedrooms. The curved roof shapes the experience of space: lower heights at the sides create more intimate areas for rest, while the central zone feels more open and expansive, suitable for social activities.
