Manta-Yoga-Shala-Concept

The Manta Yoga Shala was created as a space for yoga, meditation, and contemplation, seamlessly integrated with its coastal environment. It is a part of the Intaaya retreat in Nusa Penida. The design was inspired by the manta ray, an ocean creature that can be observed from the cliffside, characterized by its curved form and flowing movements as it moves through the water.

The project connects to its site by emerging directly from the land, creating a design that feels intrinsic to the territory. The structure’s curves generate strategic openings and enclosures, providing both protection and a controlled entry of light. A central skylight is precisely positioned to allow midday sunlight to enter the core of the space, creating a direct link between the exterior and the body during yoga practice.

The structure is built with a combination of locally sourced bamboo and rammed earth, handcrafted methods that embrace flexibility and organic forms. These materials were chosen for their ecological value and ability to blend seamlessly with the landscape. Sustainability is expressed through passive strategies that prioritize natural light and ventilation. The curved forms and strategic openings maximize air circulation, while the careful placement of elements provides shade and protection. The building’s relationship with the land also contributes to its environmental responsibility, minimizing alterations to the existing topography.

Inside, the space feels both open and distinct. Its design allows users to contemplate the ocean from the cliff’s edge. The geometry and thoughtfully crafted openings including the arches formed by the bamboo structure shape the experience, creating a strong connection between the human form and the rhythm of the sea. The final result is a space that functions as an extension of the natural world, generating an immersive experience for its users.
