Shell Lobby

At the entrance of Intaaya Retreat in Nusa Penida, the Shell Lobby Serves as a welcoming space for guests, and a first impression of the retreat. Conceived as more than a reception area, it acts as a threshold between land and sea, grounding guests in their surroundings while opening them to the horizon.

The form draws inspiration from the seashell, its roof unfolding in fluid curves that suggest both shelter and movement. Anchored by three structural cores, the building achieves stability while maintaining an uninterrupted, open interior. At the rear, 26 trios of Dendrocalamus Asper bamboo rise in parallel, their rhythm evoking the ridges of a shell. Two additional clusters of 12 trios form tree-like columns at the front, lifting the canopy outward and framing a panoramic view of the ocean. This arrangement brings both strength and elegance, while allowing air to move freely through the space.

Craftsmanship is central to the lobby’s character. A finely woven bamboo ceiling softens the structure overhead, while individually carved wooden shingles follow the curvature of the roof. The floor and entrance pathway are formed from limestone blocks sourced and shaped on-site, their lime-based finish reinforcing the tactile connection to the land.

Every element of the Shell Lobby reflects Intaaya Retreat’s commitment to artistry and environmental consciousness. By uniting bamboo, wood, stone and earth, the lobby becomes more than a point of arrival. It becomes the first expression of Intaaya’s dialogue between architecture and nature.
