Les Yoga Shala

The Yoga Shala, located in Les, Bali, rises above the ground on a secluded hillside. Part of the Bumi Cinta Eco Retreat, the unique placement gives it a panoramic view of the land and nature, allowing constant engagement with the natural rhythms of the environment, from the changing light to the flow of the wind. The design sought to provide a unique sense of intimacy and to reflect the spiritual culture of Bali. The name “Shala” itself means “home” in Sanskrit, reinforcing the feeling of being in a safe, familiar, and sacred space.

The structure’s oval shape and elevated position, beyond its form, were specifically designed to offer a 180-degree view of the surrounding landscape, making you feel fully enveloped by nature. Les Yoga Shala represents a sanctuary where the boundaries between the built environment and nature dissolve. It is a space that encourages a deeper connection to oneself and to the unity of everything around us, fostering a sense of peace and belonging.

The project uses locally sourced and recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood and bamboo, honoring traditional Balinese craftsmanship while minimizing environmental impact. The design itself follows a passive strategy, using the elevated, open structure to maximize natural ventilation and light, reducing the need for air conditioning and artificial lighting. The integration of the building with the existing topography also helps prevent soil erosion. The construction technique focuses on creating a fluid, open structure that is elevated to maximize the views and natural light.

Being inside Les Yoga Shala feels like being part of the landscape, not just observing it. The wide, open space and 180-degree view create a sense of freedom and lightness. It is an environment that encourages quiet reflection and spiritual practice, helping to shape daily rituals around a strong connection to nature.
