12. Models – The importance of the architectural model.

With Pablo Luna Studio.

Along with sketches, models are an essential part of architectural design. It consists of a small-scale representation used as a guide to show construction details, operation, or even appearance.
It is a means of exploration through which the client is presented with the project, but through which the architect visualizes his work and resolves possible conflicts regarding volume, materials, and finishes.

Nowadays, it is possible to create virtual architectural models in 3D, thanks to specialized software, which has evolved to simulate reality with impeccable quality.
The physical and handcrafted component of the models generates a real sensation in both, the architect and the client.
Many materials allow models to be made, from paper to cement or glycerin, but all of them seek to resemble the final project or emphasize its elements and qualities of it.

Benefits of architectural models:

1. Buildings are human experiences, so if the design is intended to result in the physical creation, then handmade physical models are of fundamental value when imagining the experience.
2. It has a much more tight control with infinite possibilities of exploration and search of a concept or an idea, connecting in a tangible and real way generating a direct connection between the brain and the hand and, therefore to reality.
3. It offers a set in three dimensions, making it possible to contemplate the project to scale from each of its angles and perspectives with greater depth and sense of reality to the whole work, which will allow the team to adjust the project and new ideas to emerge. Expanding the possibilities of the final result of the project.
4. A fundamental role in the presentation of the project, which will allow the clients to have a very close and well-formed vision of what will be the actual work.

As an architectural firm that works mainly with bamboo, this medium is vital to be able to express our ideas and bring them to reality. That is why we take care of every detail and allow ourselves to experiment until we find the desired result.

Generally, we scale them to 1:50 or 1:25, where each of the bamboo sticks is scaled to each bamboo that will be used in the actual construction of the building so that we can explore in a more realistic and structurally optimal way.
This is our second step in designing a building. The first thing is to make a conceptual study of what we want to do with a drawing or sketch of what we imagine, and then we go to the modeling of that concept, from which, when it is ready, we extract all the information for the planimetry, render, structure, etc.

Therefore, we use this model for the explorative part and to communicate it and transmit it to the client and communicate it to the construction builders together with the design and structure planimetry.
In short, the architectural model has gone from being an aesthetic instrument to becoming a fundamental tool in the architectural process of any building, providing usefulness and efficiency and greatly expanding the possibilities of work.
